Es ist weitgehend unbekannt, dass französische Historiker in der Tradition der Annales unter den ersten waren, die Methoden der physischen Anthropologie und der biologischen Wissenschaften zu benutzen, um historische Fragestellungen zu erhellen. Eine dieser Fragestellungen steht in Beziehung zur bis dato erstaunlichsten Entdeckung dieser Disziplin: dass die körperliche Statur des Menschen - als ein teil der Anpassungsfähigkeit sozio-ökonomischer Umgebungen, im Laufe des letzten Viertels des vergangenen Jahrtausends veritable Zyklen durchlaufen hat. Diese Studie stellt eine Bemühung um die Erweiterung unseres Wissens um den Ernährungszustand des Mittelstandes in Frankreich dar und untersucht hierfür die Körperstatur von Studenten einer Ecole Polytechnique.Diese Datensammlung beschreibt die Größenverteilung der Studenten der Ecole Polytechnique de Palaiseau während der Französischen Revolution und der folgenden Periode wirtschaftlichen Wachstums. Die dargestellten Informationen beinhalten Monat und Jahr der Immatrikulation, Geburtsmonat und -jahr, Provinz und Ort der herkunft, Größe in cm, Familienoberhaupt sowie die Berufe der Eltern.

It is widely unknown that French historians in the tradition of Annales were among the first who used the methods of physical anthropology and biology to address historical issues. One of these issues is related with the then most surprising discovery of this discipline: human physical stature, able to adapt to socio-economic surroundings, has run through veritable cycles in the last quarter of the last millennium. This study aims to expand knowledge about the nutritional status of Frances’ middle class. In order to do so the physical stature of students of the Ecole Polytechnique are examined. The data set describes the distribution of height of the students of the Ecole Polytechnique de Palaiseau in the period of the French revolution and the following period of economic growth. The presented information contain month and year of matriculation, month and year of birth, province and place of origin, height in cm, head of the family and occupation of parents.
