Gauteng State of the Youth Interviews (GSYI) 2018-19: Gauteng, South Africa

DOI

Description: The data set reflects the focus group discussion that aimed to unpack the discursive construction of perceptions on the state of the youth in the Gauteng Province, as well as obtain views on the Tshepo 1 Million programme, an employment support entity of the Gauteng Office of the Premier.

Fifteen participants participated in the discussion. Abstract: The Gauteng State of the Youth (GSY) is a cross-sectional survey that focuses on young adults aged between 15 and 34 years in Gauteng. The data is collected on key youth issues identified by the Gauteng Office of the Premier to help develop the necessary strategies and policy interventions for youth empowerment and development in the province. These youth issues include employment and education status, interpersonal violence, youth risk behaviour, HIV/AIDS knowledge, and political trust and active citizenship. A quantitative bivariate analysis was used to assess these topics to describe the current situation of the youth in the province.

The GSY study also contains a qualitative element in which a focus group discussion was used to generate qualitative data on the experiences and perceptions of youth involved in the Tshepo 1Million programme. Through a discursive qualitative analysis, the study mapped the narrative around several youth issues, including experiences and perceptions of the youth, township economic development, skill and non-skill barriers to employment, and an assessment of the Tshepo 1Million programme
