The relationship of the Slovak population to literature

DOI

The survey ran within a cycle of five surveys titled: Perception of Art in Slovakia after 2000. The objective was to map the extent of people's relationships to various music genres at several levels. The initial question measured the intensity of interest in each type of art (intensive, average, little, not at all) on the basis of the selected criteria.  Further questions were asked about whether the respondents were read fairy tales by their parents or grandparents when they were children. The degree of popularity of certain activities carried out in the respondent's free time, including reading books, was measured. In response to open-ended questions, respondents were asked to list their favourite domestic and foreign writers. They were then asked to indicate whether they were regular readers of books, whether they borrowed them and whether they were interested in them.  Next, their level of interest in challenging fiction, leisure or specialist literature, frequency of regular reading, number of books read per year, most frequently read (favourite) genre of literature, and reading literature in other languages were measured. Two batteries of questions were related to reading literacy - the ability to associate the correct title of a work with a Slovak and a foreign author. The willingness to invest in buying literature and the incentives that most influence the decision to buy a book were also examined, as well as the interest in reading literary magazines. The final questions explored whether the respondent had read fairy tales to their children and any aspirations for their own literary work. The research was carried out on a sample of 1500 respondents (population of the Slovak Republic aged 15 and over) by a survey network according to quota characteristics (gender, age, education, number of inhabitants of residence, nationality, district, region), but also economic status, religion, social class (highest, upper middle, middle, lower middle, lowest), political orientation (left, right, centre, other).
