International Civic and Citizenship Education Study-ICCS

DOI

The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is the largest international study of civic and citizenship education ever conducted and studied the ways in which countries prepare their young people to undertake their roles as citizens. 38 countries in total participated in this study, which was carried out from 2006 to 2009. ICCS 2009 was based on the premise that preparing students for citizenship roles involves helping them develop relevant knowledge and understanding and form positive attitudes toward being a citizen and participating in activities related to civic and citizenship education. It included an extensive study of the content of curricula and school textbooks for Civic and Citizenship Education, cognitive tests to explore adolescents' knowledge of citizenship and their achievement in Civic and Citizenship Education, as well as questions on a range of citizenship issues to identify attitudes and behaviors on issues such as democracy, rights, political and social participation, etc. For the European countries that participated in the Study, an additional part of the student questionnaire was created with questions about students' knowledge and attitudes towards the European Union and its policies. In Greece data was collected for students in grades 8 and 9. In addition, teachers and school principals completed questionnaires on educational practices and school climate. Information on national education systems was provided by all participating countries. All participating countries applied strict criteria for the sampling procedure, translation of research tools, data collection, and student test grading to avoid biased results and to ensure comparability of data between countries. Data in this documentation regard students attitudes towards civic and citizenship education in grades 8 and 9.
